The Community Foundation manages 79 scholarship funds totaling over $6.4 million. Scholarships are available to graduating high school students (including home school) and college students residing within Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan counties. In 2011, over $316,000 was awarded to deserving students within the three county area for use in the furthering of their education.
Determination of Awards
Scholarship recipients are selected on an objective and competitive basis considering academic and non-academic factors as well as demonstrated financial need. Some awards are made only on the basis of past student performance. Each scholarship has its own award level and selection committee, which recommends applicants to the Community Foundation Scholarship Committee and Board of Trustees for approval.
Determination of Financial Need
A needs analysis is conducted considering the total cost of education, the expected parent and student contribution, other funds awarded to the student, and the real unmet financial need of the student. In addition the student may be asked to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Announcement of Awards
A news release will be issued to the radio and print media of North Central Washington announcing the winners of the various scholarships. In addition, students will be informed by mail and for some at an awards presentation.
Payment of Awards
Payment is always made directly to the college or university. Initial payment of any scholarship is made upon receipt of a signed agreement from the scholarship recipient. If the scholarship award is designated to be paid over multiple years, subsequent payments are made with documentation the student has had a successful academic year and continues to meet the scholarship requirements.
