Types of Funds

The Community Foundation of North Central Washington offers a variety of funds because we recognize people give for different reasons. Choose the one that matches your personal approach to giving and your charitable intent. Our staff is eager to discuss these options with you and to help you select one that matches your philanthropic interest.

An unrestricted fund is your legacy for future generations of North Central Washington residents. The Community Foundation uses these funds to respond to changing community needs. Grants from unrestricted funds are board directed and used for education, health & human services, public and society benefit, the arts and the environment. Because grants are made only from the earnings on unrestricted funds, these funds will still be working decades from now, addressing issues we haven't yet imagined.

Agency Restricted Funds are established by non-profit organizations to provide income to them. We handle all the administrative and investment responsibilities, freeing the organization to pursue its charitable mission.

Donor Restricted Funds benefit a particular program or nonprofit organization. For example, the John & Mary Rae Brown Fund supports six of their favorite charities and will do so in perpetuity. Each year the organizations receive a check in the name of the donor.

With a single gift to the Community Foundation, you can establish a donor advised fund that allows you to be actively involved in grantmaking to any number of charitable organizations. Your gift qualifies for an immediate tax deduction, and you can take your time deciding which organizations to recommend for grants. The Community Foundation’s professional grantmaking staff is available to help you learn about issues and organizations you’re interested in. Grants from your fund may be made in your name or anonymously, according to your preference. You can even involve your children so that your giving continues on.

Creating a field of interest fund, either during your lifetime or through your will, is a wonderful way to establish a permanent resource for an area of special concern to you, such as for children, the elderly, health, education, the arts or the environment. The Community Foundation will use your fund in perpetuity to make grants within the area you specify, even as conditions and needs evolve. A field-of-interest fund for medical research, for example, might have been used years ago to fight polio, and today be working to rid the world of AIDS.

Scholarship Funds have been created by generous individuals or organizations to provide tuition assistance to qualified students. The Community Foundation currently manages many different scholarship funds, each of which has its own set of criteria for selecting recipients. We'll be glad to help you design a scholarship program to fit your goals.

The Foundation recommends a fund balance of at least $10,000 before awards are made.

With the approval of the Board of Trustees, the Community Foundation of North Central Washington will serve as the fiscal sponsor of a meaningful community special project. The project is usually one time, of short duration and/or until the project obtains its own 501(c)(3) status with the IRS.

A life income gift lets you provide life income for yourself (and a survivor) and at the same time increase the grant giving resources of the Community Foundation. Several types of life income gifts generate substantial tax and financial benefits for you.

A fund may be created to benefit a particular town, city or county in Chelan, Douglas or Okanogan Counties. An area advisory committee made up of citizens representing the area make recommendations for the distribution of grants to support that particular geographic area. That group has ownership of how the fund might best be used to benefit the region. The city of Waterville has established this type of fund and since its inception has awarded over $59,900 in grants.
